AXYZ introduces latest Pacer high-performance CNC router

Pacer Series CNC Router

Launched at Sign & Digital UK, the latest Pacer-branded high-performance CNC router series is now available from AXYZ International. Supplied in a choice of three sizes (1524 x 2438, 1524 x 3048 and 2159 x 3048mm) to meet different production requirements and the most popular sheet formats, the machines embody all of the attributes of earlier systems sold under the Pacer power brand in terms of strength of build, ease of use, quality of cut and optimum reliability. They also represent an ideal upgrade path for owners of these systems now requiring a higher performance and higher productivity solution but at a very realistic price.

Key design features include a heavy-duty solid steel base and gantry with a substrate clearance capability of 150mm (expandable up to 400mm), helical rack and pinion drive system with direct-drive servomotors and ball screw control on the Z-axis for smoother and backlash-free motion and the latest seven-segment A2MC machine controller with Ethernet connectivity and 4Gb onboard memory. These are supplemented with a wide range of optional additional production tools, including a seven- or 21-station automatic tool change system, twin or triple cutting heads, the latest AXYZ AVS Camera Registration System and a misting unit.

The routers will effectively cut and profile at a feed rate of up to 25m/min virtually all materials commonly used in the signmaking industry. These include all non-ferrous metals, plastics and their derivatives, solid and particle wood substrates, aluminium composite materials and laminates.

Full on-site training and after-sales technical support are provided by the AXYZ International team of technical engineers, with further information available at www.axyz.co.uk or by telephoning 01902 375600

Eurobond Clearfix - Eurobond combats cold weather with new product launches

Eurobond Adhesives has added a brand new product, Clear-Fix, to its range of adhesives specifically for signmaking applications.

Clear-Fix from Eurobond Adhesives Ltd is a clear, high strength polymer hybrid adhesive and sealant. It has all the high bond strength and chemical resistance of a polyurethane plus the fantastic sealing properties of a silicone. Clear-Fix offers excellent adhesion to a huge range of substrates, whilst providing toughened flexibility throughout the bond-line. This new product also has a unique adhesion promoter which enables it to be applied to damp surfaces or in wet conditions.

Very versatile and able to bond a wide range of substrates withEurobond Adhesives Clear-Fix out the need for surface primers or conditioners, Clear-Fix is ideal for many different applications. Typical bonding applications encompass plastics, metals and modern composites in commercial signage, clear letters into sign faces, glass to metal and wood, and carbon fibre panels. Further applications include bonding/sealing sign systems and sealing and weatherproofing joints.

Clear-Fix will not shrink on curing, will tolerate -55°C to +100°C, has an open time of around 10 minutes and gains a very fast initial grab with thorough cure in approximately 24 hours.

Cold weather

With this winter being one of the coldest in recent years, it's worth remembering how much cold weather can affect the integrity of some adhesive tapes. Applying adhesive tapes in low temperatures or on to cold surfaces can result in a slower cure time and weaker adhesion to the surface, leading to failure that in turn costs sign makers money in repair work, as well as damaging their reputation.

To help overcome this problem, Eurobond Adhesives has launched EB3040G, an adhesive tape developed specifically for use in low temperatures approaching zero degrees C. Able to tolerate huge temperature variations, from -40 to +160 degrees C, this new adhesive tape is also ideal for application to those difficult to bond 'low surface energy' materials such as EVA, polypropylene, polyethylene and even silicone surfaces.

EB3040G is a foamed acrylic adhesive tape available in 12mm, 19mm, 25mm and 50mm widths with various tape thicknesses and roll lengths.

Prices frozen

When the standard VAT rate increased to 20% in January, some suppliers might have used this as an opportunity to mask their own price increases but Eurobond Adhesives has announced a price freeze.

"We recognise that the current state of the UK economy is adding to the pressure on sign making businesses already struggling to remain competitive. In order to help, I have decided to freeze all our prices for signmaking adhesives and adhesive tapes until July 2011. In six months we will review again and hope to be in a position to continue the price freeze until January 2012," explains Simon Dearing, Managing Director at Eurobond Adhesives Ltd.

Distributors sought for street signs with robust green credentials

Robust and recyclable road signs with a tough polycarbonate and a patented clip A variety of Sign components Street name sign with daffodils in the background.
N Sign Ltd, a sign manufacturer based in Stockton-on-Tees, is seeking signmaking businesses to distribute its award winning and patented Street Nameplates to regional councils and local authorities.

The Street Nameplates are made from polycarbonate, the same material used in the covers of fighter jet cockpits. In rigorous testing they’ve proved to be extremely robust and have the added benefit of a unique clip, intrinsic to the way the top fits together, which further helps deter vandalism.

Alun Pearson, Managing Director at N Sign explains the inspiration behind the Street Nameplates: “Three or four years ago when we were making steel street signs for a local council I decided we should manufacture high quality street signs using a recycled material that would also be recyclable. I’d seen some signs around made from recycled polythene but they weren’t good, expanding and contracting with temperature changes, I knew they weren’t right for us.”

After time and money spent in research, Alun developed what he believes is the ideal product, which he then patented. N Sign sold its first recycled and recyclable Street Nameplate two and a half years ago and won Renew Tees Valley Product of the Year soon after.

To date, the company has supplied Street Nameplates to more than 45 local authorities. That number’s still growing and councils are increasingly specifying them for areas subject to high levels of vandalism, so Alun explains why the company is looking for distributors.

“The Street Nameplates’ toughness and green credentials are exactly what’s wanted. We know the market is out there because on several occasions we could have got orders, even though councils prefer to buy locally. But taking into account travel and accommodation, it just wasn’t cost effective for us to serve many parts of the country,” he says.

“We would supply the kit for a local sign maker to put on their vinyls, fit in to the tray and attach the legs. Street Nameplates are the perfect opportunity to get a foot in the door with their regional council. The margins on selling these signs alone aren't huge, but they can lead to loads more sign work.”

Street Nameplates alone makes up only about 10 per cent of N Sign’s work; the company provides a wide range of different signage and engraving solutions, from the simple to complex, using variety of different materials. But Alun estimates that figure is nearer 25 per cent when you count all the jobs that have come about as leads from Street Nameplates.

“We’ve often supplied Street Nameplates and it turns out they need other new signage, such as livery for all their vehicles, and then we’ve won that work too,” says Alun.

Claire Spink, Engineering Assistant at Hambleton District Council, is just one satisfied customer.

Claire says: “N-Sign provides Hambleton District Council a superb quality and efficient service, which use recycled materials and I would recommend their Street Nameplates."

The Street Nameplates sign trays are available in two sizes, 1120 x 150 mm and 1120 x 285 mm. To find out more or to discuss distributorship, visit the website www.n-sign.co.uk or telephone 01642 800222.
