Richard W Rinn from Insight Sign Systems tells us about their latest range:

"Highlight Mk5 is the latest incarnation of the first ever made to measure extruded aluminium trough lighting system, dating back to 1981, with the fabricated aluminium precursor dating back to 1975.

This latest version was developed with the main objective being to make it the most efficient form of sign illumination available, due to the relentless quest by many for greener illumination. Insight is proud to have achieved this with Highlight Mk5, and can offer three variations of brightness and economy to satisfy most requirements. With the most economical version, Ecobright, the objective has been achieved, providing 1040 lm/m while consuming just 8.2W per metre. This is thanks to the efficacy of the Lumirescent LED strip achieving 127 lm/W. If you want the ultimate brightness, Hyperbright provides 2020 lm/m, consuming 16.8W per metre, with the same efficacy as Ecobright.

Highlight Mk5 offers perfect illumination across the entire width of any sign or fascia due to having 126 LEDs per metre, so no shadows caused by spaced out LEDs. Mk5's unique profile shape incorporates a reflector area to direct the light down the sign face without the requirement to tilt or angle the light. This eliminates the reflection of the light source caused when lights are tilted inwards to the sign face. The profile shape also masks the light source from the front, to avoid dazzle.

Ease of installation of any product is very important, and has always been one of Highlight's strong points. The clip on fit fixing brackets which have provided trouble-free service for around 25 years have been retained. But the channel has been modernised now, with provision for the mains feed cable to pass through. A new horizontal fixing plate is optionally available, with three fixing holes for rigidity (two fixings side by side are not recommended for any external light with wind loading).

Trough lighting has some unique benefits. If you compare against a back-lit box for example, a box 6 x 2 m would these days more than likely be fitted with LEDs to reduce consumption and cut Co2 emissions. But when you consider that would require seven rows of LEDs compared to Highlight Mk5 using only one, that has got to be a very important consideration. Highlight Mk5 is also going to be much easier to transport and install than a bulky, heavy sign box. Sign panels never require removal for maintenance, and front lighting brings out the true colours of the complete sign face.

Like all products, eventually competitors will match or better the specification of Highlight Mk5. But as we are already testing the next Lumirescent LED strip, which offers even higher efficacy and brightness coupled with the testing of 3M light enhancement film, we are confident in continuing to lead the way."

Insight LED shines even brighter

Two different LED systems next each otherHighlight Mk5, due out soon, has had further 'improvements made to its efficacy and brightness' going from 2,000 lm/m @ 110 lm/W to 2,024 lm/m @ 120 lm/W. The high performance LEDs, coupled with efficient drivers and a semi circular beam angle-reducing light channel in the extrusion, make Mk5 an 'outstanding performer'.

If you are purchasing any LED system, for any application, efficacy is a very important specification, and is a bit like miles per gallon on a car, only it is brightness per watt of electricity, says the company.

This very bright version of Insight's LEDs, named Hyperbright consumes less than 17 W per metre length. If you want to reduce the energy consumption even further, there is also Ecobright, which is still bright and 'compares favourably with other systems on the market'. It produces 1,038 lm/m but at a very high (good) efficacy of 127 lm/W, consuming just over 8 W per metre. For something in between, there is Superbright, which gives 1,410 lm/m @ 127 lm/W, consuming 11 W per metre.

The new Mk4 profile shape has been very carefully designed to ensure the light is directed on to the sign face. So no angling or tilting required, as angling any light source inward just causes reflection on the sign face, making lettering hard to read. The very latest 3D printing has been utilised to produce many prototypes to ensure that when bulk extrusion is produced, it performs as it should.

Although it was decided to phase fluorescent out, room has been left to be able to house T5 fluorescent lamps and control gear, but T8 will not fit. The profile height has also been reduced to around 50 mm, making it less obtrusive and even easier to handle. An unique joining section also prevents light escaping at joints, supports and seals the unit, and is very easy to use.

The same fixing bracket system is used which has 'proved itself to be the best available for over 30 years'. The channel part has recently been updated on the brackets with a sleeker look, now with a channel for the mains cable to pass through.

Eco-Star overhead trough lighting.Insight Sign Systems is set to enhance its range with the addition of a new overhead trough lighting profile named Eco-Star in this spring of 2011.

As an innovator in extruded, made to measure aluminium trough lighting, Richard Rinn, managing director of Insight has been producing Highlight since his previous company back in 1976. After that company was sold, in November 1986 he formed Insight. At that time, Richard claims that Highlight was the main choice of the sign and electrical trade (the only choice) for external illumination.

Over the past 10 years, competition has arrived, which although taking sales from Highlight, has, Richard explains "helped keep us aware, and never become complacent. During this period, Highlight has been modified four times, and thanks to Insight's own brand of LEDs "Lumirescent", Highlight Mk4 is doing very well, offering the brightest LED trough light on the market (up to 15/05/10-after that others may have modified)."

To keep ahead of the competition, Insight is set to launch Eco-Star overhead trough lighting, shown at a previous sign show to gauge reaction and which at the time was very good. This is a very stylish profile, measuring just 65 x 50 mm. It is complemented by the "wave" bracket to give an overall sleek look, aimed at clients who want an elegant light, such as jewellers, salons, banks and building societies. Brightness is assured, thanks to the full range of Lumirescent LEDs, which allow you to choose between economy and high brightness. A vast range of powder coated finishes will be available, with white, black, and anodised being the standard colours.
